The CELTA stands for the Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. The certificate was formerly under the name of Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults and while the certificate has been renamed the acronym has remained the same. The CELTA is one of the most prestigious and well received English language qualifications as it is awarded through the University of Cambridge. The CELTA is intended for applicants that have very limited teaching experiences who are wanting a jump start into the field of language teaching. The CELTA is recognized as an international standard for teaching English around the world.

About the CELTA Courses

The courses for the CELTA program is intended to help applicants develop teaching practices that are informative and effective. The CELTA program awards applicants with the opportunity to gain a more hands on type of training and allows them to take the theories that they learn and put them to practical use.

The CELTA will cover 5 main segments:

  1. Planning Resources for Different Contexts
  2. Developing Teaching Skills and Professionalism
  3. Language Analysis and Awareness
  4. Teachers and Learners and the Context
  5. Language Skills: Speaking, Writing, Listening, and Reading

The program will be conducted with assessments being conducted throughout the course. There is not a final examination. There are two different types of exams the written assignment and the teaching practice. In order to obtain certification you must be able to pass both of the assessments.

CELTA Assessments

As stated above the program will have two main assessments the teaching practice and the final written assignments.

  • Teaching: The teaching practice will be conducted when the applicant teaches for a six hour period working with different classes at least two different levels of communication abilities. The assessment will be completed at the duration of those six hours and applicants will be assessed on how well they conducted the teaching periods.
  • Writing: Applicants are required to complete a minimum of four different writing assignments that will focus on the following areas:
    1. Reflections on Classroom Teaching
    2. Teaching Effective Language Skills
    3. Analyzing Language for Teaching Purposes
    4. Analyzing and Responding to Learner Needs

CELTA – Different Ways to Take the Program

  • Full Time- This full time program usually lasts for a maximum duration of 4-5 weeks
  • Part Time- This part time program usually lasts for a few months up to a year
  • Online- This program option is one of the most flexible options that allows applicants to study wherever they are in the world and allows a more flexible time schedule. The online option allows for the same curriculum as well as feedback and evaluation from supervisors.

The CELTA program is offered in hundreds of different centers around the world. In order to get started applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Applicants must have the standard education needed to be accepted into a program for higher education.
  • You must have some proficiency in the English language
